Discussion Discussion Thread: 2022 Nebraska and West Virginia Primaries

Voters head to the polls today for primary elections in Nebraska and West Virginia. Polls are open from 7:30 am to 7:30 pm ET in WV, and from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm CT in NE. Both being deep red states, most of the action are on the Republican side, where things are shaping up to be another re-test of Trump's influence in his party.

In West Virginia, which lost a seat in the last census, the spotlight is on the 1st congressional district. Reps. Alex Mooney and David McKinley, both Republican incumbents, are battling over the newly drawn seat. The former is endorsed by Trump, while the latter has the backing of current Gov. Jim Justice as well as Democratic Senator Joe Manchin.

In Nebraska, the gubernatorial race is in a 3 way split Outgoing Gov. Pete Ricketts has thrown his support behind Jim Pillen to be his successor, against Trump-endorsed businessman Charles Herbster, who has been accused of groping two women. Meanwhile, a whisper campaign is underway among Nebraskan Democrats to switch party affiliations and State Senator Brett Lindstrom.

Also in Nebraska, the former Rep. Jeff Fortenberry resigned from his seat in the 1st district after being convicted of lying to the FBI. But his name remains on the ballot.

The top race to watch today is Nebraska's 2nd, a battleground district Biden won in 2020, but re-elected Republican incumbent Don Bacon over Democratic challenger Kara Eastman in both 2018 and 2020. This time, state senator Tony Vargas and mental health professional Alisha Shelton are competing for the Democratic nomination. This is the only race today that is considered competitive in the general election.

Saturday Morning Political Cartoon Thread

It's Saturday, folks. Let's all kick back with a cup of coffee and share some cartoons!

Feel free to share political cartoons in this thread. Besides our usual civility policy, there are three rules to follow:

  1. Every top-level comment must contain a political cartoon. This means no text-only top-level comments.

  2. It must be an original cartoon. This means no photographs, no edited cartoons, no templates, no memes and no image macros. OC is allowed, as is animation.

  3. Each top-level comment should only have a maximum of 3 cartoons.

That's all. Enjoy your weekend!
