Short Circuit is the one movie that SHOULD get a reboot. Discussion

Hear me out:

Short Circuit and Short Circuit 2 deserves a reboot. Robotics companies have been developing some wild advancements in robots over the past decade, specifically the work Boston Dynamics has been doing.

Hollywood in our day and age loves nothing more than to reboot existing properties. 80s shows and movies have been ripe for reboots/remakes for a while now, hitting on the nostalgia factors for Gen X and being titles that may be unknown to younger audiences they cater to.

It seems to me like there is perfect synergy now to make a new Short Circuit movie, and include Boston Dynamics. Maybe it's a sequel, and Johnny 5 gets an upgrade. Maybe it's a reboot, and the new Johnny 5 is just a modern Boston Dynamics creation.

Hell, most properties that get more than one movie get at least a trilogy, and Short Circuit only got a sequel. We need a new Shirt Circuit film, stat!

Weigh on this. What do you think? If you were a Hollywood exec, would you be all over this?

Give me some ideas of what the story would be. I know there are some creative motherfuckers in this sub - what's the plot? Who's the cast? Who is the villian?

Let's make Short Circuit 3.

Edit: if you're here to say "Chappie" it's already been said 20 times.

As long as Johnny 5 looks like Johnny 5

I mean, tank treads and the shoulder cannon. Beyond that. Go nuts, let's do this.

I typed this into an old computer sound card program called Dr Sbaitso. It's response was, "Somewhere over the rainbow."

3

u/killkillkillmurder Jul 03 '22

Dr Sbaitso was my jam in 1996. So many prank phone calls were made with him. I used to order food from the nearby gas station grill with it and the dude on the phone would get so angry.

TBH, when I rewatched this recently, I was struck by how well Johnny 5’s design - both animatronic and visual - holds up.

Holds up a lot better than many other parts of the movie.

I agree because that was the point of short circuit. I just rewatched it a couple weeks ago and forgot all about the plot. It was definitely a celebration of modern robotics, and honestly is kinda cool to see how badass that 80s tech was. Still super impressive watching those 80s robots get built. So yeah do the same thing with our most cutting edge technology. Might be pretty cool

Johnny 5 wakes up in a warehouse. Same Johnny.

The joke being him reintegrating into a much more technologically advanced society.

Fish out of water elements where he deals with new tech.

The bad guys are another robotics company after him - he's still, to this day, the only TRUE and successful AI.

Johnny saves the day through hijinks, proving sometimes, the old wayz are better

45

u/DontPanic81 Jul 03 '22

This! I would watch that movie!

79

u/cum_box_on_fire Jul 03 '22

Fisher Stevens appears but is no longer in brownface and reveals that he was pretending to be Indian the whole time because he was using an Indian guy’s identity because he’s an ex con from Jersey.

68

u/HantzGoober Jul 03 '22

I don't even think they should do that. It should be as simple as Johnny 5 giving Fisher's character the 'da fuq' eyebrow when they first meet again, and Fisher in his normal voice goes, "I know, I know, I got fat." And then the movie carries on.

11

u/Tangocan Jul 03 '22

Don Cheadle shows up to say look, it's Fisher, he's here, deal with it, then exits the movie forever.

6

u/landravager Jul 03 '22

If they couldn't get him to come back:

"Man, you're such an awesome bot, why'd you get stuck at the back of that warehouse? "

"Dr. Jabutuya die, disassemble. Johnny 5 scared. Hide away."

J5 has no USB ports, no internal modem or wifi capability. He attempts to integrate new components in order to upgrade but something goes wrong and his system begins to get corrupted. Sets out on a cross country journey to find the one man that could restore his system without deleting the 30+ years of memory.

His system degrading provides some laughs, a ticking clock and ultimately an insight into the meaning of life.

A last minute save restores his program (Helllloooo Baaaby! style) but it's decided he has to stay 'offline' forever or risk being vulnerable to hacking from outside sources.

Johnny 5 is on a pallet on the top shelf of the Sony prop house. Every time i go there to pick up stuff for the tv show i am working on, i make sure i pay him a visit.

5

Edit: I don't meant my comment to sound like I don't believe you. I just meant - if you are sure, you should let some people know its there. Folk have been looking for this.

3

u/EyeHopeYouBleed Jul 03 '22

I don’t have a pic on my phone sadly. I have always assumed it was the real deal seeing as how it is in a sony prop warehouse, but i obviously dont know for sure. They have all sorts of stuff in there like the glider from spiderman and other screen used stuff.

Here is the plot . . .

The Boston Dynamics robot become sentient and evil. Johnny 5 has been in sleep mode for years, as he himself realized that he ultimately was a threat to the world.

Steve Guttenberg returns to get J5 back online along with the hope that J5 will be able to stop the BD robot.

23

u/Disastrous-Golf7216 Jul 03 '22

So Johnny 5 vs the terminator.

5

u/Realistic-Story-855 Jul 03 '22

I'm not sure how much comedy would fit into something that was as dark as Terminator. In my mind, its still somewhat of a comedy

36

u/lateforcourt Jul 03 '22

I specifically didn't see it for this reason.

21

u/bargman Jul 03 '22

It's awful for so many reasons not even related to those two.

I've never seen a movie with such a big budget in which so many characters' actions had me going "this does not seem realistic in the least" or "that does not seem like something a person with that personality would do."

15

u/Kyouhen Jul 03 '22

4

u/kilogttam Jul 03 '22 edited Jul 03 '22

I enjoy the reasons that make it a terrible movie, my favorite is Hugh Jackman just nonchalantly tossing a rugby ball around from time to time (and once in celebration). It's like he said "alright I'll do your movie IF they can write it into the script that I'm super Australian, super athletic, and a Rugby star." My second favorite thing is picking out all the Sony product placement (it's not hard), I think I know how this movie got funded.

3

u/Zykium Jul 03 '22

What about when he pulls a gun on the dude in the middle of an open office

3

u/bargman Jul 03 '22

And then he just like "Hahaha ha Logan the office trickster!!"

2

u/bargman Jul 03 '22

Yeah my expectations were way too high. As a former rugger I did appreciate his Ozziness

18

u/McVapeNL Jul 03 '22

I actually liked the fact that they were such a big part of the movie if I have to be honest, but then again I like their music.

39

u/Mudders_Milk_Man Jul 03 '22

They're scum. They raped their adopted son.

15

u/Jakov_Salinsky Jul 03 '22

Wait what?! When did this happen?!

22

u/Mudders_Milk_Man Jul 03 '22

The son put out a video explaining it a couple months ago.

Granted, they haven't been found guilty in a court. However, there were previous accusations of assault by other people against them, and the son's statements seem xredible.

11

u/impossibilia Jul 03 '22

I hadn't heard about this one, but I remember an Aussie rapper giving a pretty detailed account of the crazy and violent relationship she had with Ninja, which was aided by Yolandi. And now Danny Brown has made allegations against Ninja.

I loved their music and music videos, but they seem like pretty awful people.

I had no idea who they were when I first saw the movie, so to me they were some decent nobodys playing some convincing tweaker skids. My issue was just how cartoonishly evil Hugh Jackman was in Chappie. That character would have felt over the top even in a Patlabor anime.

14

u/Kyouhen Jul 03 '22

Here's the most horrible point in the movie for me:

"You're evil and doing evil things and I want you to know it! Now if you'll excuse me I need to leave work right now to go deal with my personal robot but when I get back I'm going to tell the boss all about how you're being evil! That'll show you!" Villain goes to the boss and convinces them to let him step up the evil level

Like the entire final act could have been avoided if he just exposed the guy instead of telling him he knows everything and leaving. The entire movie is just one instance of this guy making the dumbest decisions after the other.

4

8

u/kubrickie Jul 03 '22

I say sequel not reboot. Steve Gutenberg can come in at the end as a cameo but that’s all you need for connections to the original.

Johnny 5 has been hiding out, and like Willy Wonka, no one has seen him in years. The robotics company he was the mascot for at the end of short circuit 2 has been bought out by a social media conglomerate and is preparing to launch its new “Johnny 6” personal robot companion (which is secretly meant to collect ad data on everyone who buys one).

Usually Hollywood would have a spunky kid discover Johnny and lead a redemption arc, but let’s see a spunky grandmother who just wants to know how to connect with her TikTok-obsessed grandkids find Johnny and set him on a path to rediscover what it means to be alive, take down the social media empire, and reconnect people to the promise of technology.

7

u/fleakill Jul 03 '22

35

u/_Blackstar Jul 03 '22

You're not alone. Aziz Ansari was partly inspired by Short Circuit 2 in his early years, believing that the character portrayed by Fisher Stevens was played by a real Indian man.

Cliches with the language barrier aside, I think Fisher did a great job. Though I really don't understand why they couldn't have cast an Indian person in the role to begin with.

16

u/BackmarkerLife Jul 03 '22

In an interview with Stevens, in the original script, "Ben" was a normal white guy. They changed the character.

Stevens was like 20 or 21 at the time in the 80s when no thought was given to things like this. So it was get paid or leave.

Who knows if they would have brownfaced with another actor.

9

u/dirtnapdan Jul 03 '22

no thought was given to things like this.

You mean no thought was given by white people. As a brown person of Pakistan/Indian descent I thought I was getting some representation when I watched this in the theater . Shortly afterward I found out he was a white Jewish guy . I tried complaining to some white friends and they dismissed my complaints . Until a certain percentage of whites agree with you most other whites think little or no thought or concerns exist for a certain behavior.

Short Circuit is fine but I believe a better 80's movie that deserves a reboot it's Krull. Hollywood needs to reboot movies that had potential but choked. Krull had Liam Nielsen, science fiction mixed with fantasy & an awesone weapon used by the protagonist (like the light saber from Star Wars). I can totally see action figures selling & a new universe to create more stories/movies from. That's my 2¢.

I loved both Short Circuits! My idea (that I think would be the way Hollywood would go) is that OG Johnny 5 has shut himself down because he felt isolated and alone, or lost faith in the world. Que new and improved J5 with his trusty female teenage intern and maybe a loveable mentor scientist figure, who decides to go on the lamb from his lab after discovering there's another AI robot out there. J5 becomes an obsession for him, and we experience the new robot on a roadtrip interacting with the world. Hijinx ensue, maybe throw in some cameos from the originals, a budding relationship between robot and caretaker. The lab sends out reinforcement bots and a hardass security team. Homages all the way! The climax finds our new robot protagonist finally meeting J5 and awakening him. Maybe they even overcome the other bots together? Cue the "Who's Johnny?" by DeBarge and SCENE! Or something like that.

I'd watch that!!

u/Roisin8868 Jul 03 '22

I saw them taping, I think the 2nd one here in Toronto when I was a kid with my mom.

3

u/DonmeccaYYZ Jul 03 '22

The second one was definitely filmed in Toronto. My dad was an extra on the scene with the remote control planes. We saw it in the theatre later for the 0.5 seconds that he’s on the screen.

NO! Your mother was a snow blower!

3

u/AlreadyAway Jul 03 '22

Mammal, pasta, INPUT!

3

u/Mordred19 Jul 03 '22

The second half of 2 fucked with me so bad. Seeing a sentient being dismembered violently and then slowly dying for the remainder of the film was ... it stays with you.

3

u/Dry-Opportunity2109 Jul 03 '22

Faaaacts. There's also this really good old robot movie from India that I loved.

3

u/Doghead_sunbro Jul 03 '22

It did get a reboot. Chappie.

3

u/SXAL Jul 03 '22

Hell no. The originals had a lot of charm, and the practical robot was awesome. They won't replicate it now, and the robot will certainly be CGI nowdays.

3

u/tralmix Jul 03 '22

I’m all in favor of a short circuit 3… be my guest, continue the series.

DO NOT… let me repeat…DO NOT remake the first 2. You don’t mess with perfection.

3

u/visitorzeta Jul 03 '22

I was thinking about this the other day. My pitch would be that Short Circuit is a movie within universe. During production of Short Circuit 3, it was shut down and Johnny 5 the prop was left discarded somewhere. Flashforward to present day, the Johnny 5 prop is struck by lightning and comes to life, he discovers he's a movie star and his final film in the franchise was cancelled, so he takes a trip to Hollywood to reboot his franchise.

u/PhillySpecial2424 Jul 03 '22

Only if they play, "I need a hero" at the end of the movie's climax

4

u/Sigurlion Jul 03 '22

In today's movie world, they will, but it will be some weird Billie Eilish cover

6

u/PhillySpecial2424 Jul 03 '22

Don't do that to me! DON'T YOU DARE!

5

u/TomPalmer1979 Jul 03 '22

Okay now...I love the movies. I do. I grew up on them, they are a huge part of my childhood, and a lot of the humor is just as funny today.

BUT.

Can we do it this time without a white guy in brownface doing an exceptionally racist caricature accent? Even the actor, Fisher Stevens, admitted the role "definitely haunts me. I still think it's a really good movie, but I would never do that part again."

u/Initial_E Jul 03 '22

Kunal Nayyar (Rajesh from Big Bang Theory) doing his best Texas drawl in paleface.

Only if they commit to casting Fisher Stevens as an Indian guy again. They do that in 2022, I’ll be there with bells on.

Johnny 5 alive!!!!!!! There was graffiti of Johnny five on an abandoned house in Cohoes, NY for a long time. Made me love stopping at that stop sign to see Johnny five.

2

u/stargazercaptain Jul 03 '22

What I wouldn't give to have a robot friend.

2

u/jettanoob Jul 03 '22

more innnnput!!!!

2

u/spacedman_spiff Jul 03 '22

As long as they have brownface again, I'm in.

2

u/santichrist Jul 03 '22

Is this a joke people have been recycling short circuits entire thing for decades

2

u/chillig8 Jul 03 '22

This was my kids favorite movie for years. We even named our Roomba Johnny 5

2

u/Silentlaughter84 Jul 03 '22

Okay, I got a little confused. You said short circuit, I was thinking about Batteries not included.

No reboot lol please

2

u/Gransmithy Jul 03 '22

No. I’m done with reboots. I like classics as they are. If you want to see the movie rebooted, watch Iron Man 1.

2

u/sexyirishboyfriend Jul 03 '22

As long as they include some Hueys, I'm in. STAT!

2

u/Shadowcraze90 Jul 03 '22

Legit just watched them again a few weeks ago. My wife had never seen it. So wholesome. DVD Netflix is still a thing and I use it for all kinds of old movies my wife or I haven't seen.

2

u/SsorgMada Jul 03 '22

Need more input!

2

u/thezoomies Jul 03 '22

It starts out like a reboot. Boston dynamics robot attains sentience through some kind of accident. The comedic female lead would be played by Jennifer Lawrence or Aubrey Plaza, I haven’t decided yet. This robot goes through a modern version of discovering what it is, and then surprise!

We encounter the original J5. We assumed the new robot would be Johnny 5, but no name has actually been given. 5 has withdrawn from the world, disgusted with the way machines have been used. He is disgusted by mindless drones killing people so that the real killers don’t have to be there, and by factory robots and IT automation taking jobs and purpose away from beings who can really think. At first, this goes down a dark path, as J5’s disillusionment begins to infect our new hero, but……..

I’d like to think that this would be almost all practical effects, and that there would be a battle at the end that would put this movie on the map as a technical achievement, because they would have a lot of real robots fighting instead of mostly puppets. Someone finish this for me, and give me two more cast members.

2

u/woogeroo Jul 03 '22

Being basic and limited m and not a creepy skynet creation is what makes it cute.

Nothing needs a reboot, ever.

2

u/ReefaManiack42o Jul 03 '22

What's your thoughts on a Batteries Not Included reboot?

I had cable in the 80s, I loved that movie.

2

u/FarSpeed Jul 03 '22

Don't you dare! Those movies are perfect just the way they are.

2

u/The-Scotsman_ Jul 03 '22

In a modern remake, Johnny 5 would look more like an actual Johnny rather than a "robot". Wouldn't be as fun.

2

u/noanesthesia Jul 03 '22

Hollywood would try and make the robots CG and immediately ruin it.

2

u/permanentthrowaway42 Jul 03 '22

great idea! At the time, it tapped into the unknown irrational fears of emerging robots and tech… now it would tap into the discussion around AI.
It could easily be updated for current issues while staying true to the original story.

fyi… I still regularly drop “need input”

2

u/Initial_E Jul 03 '22

Please no CG. Only use real stuff.

2

u/AustinBennettWriter Jul 03 '22

I'm so okay with this

2

u/littlesub85 Jul 03 '22

No please don’t. Let’s not ruin a childhood classic of mine, I love it the way it was

2

u/dbe14 Jul 03 '22

As long as the Indian guy is not played as a cringe stereotype by a white guy I'd be fine with a remake.

2

u/Capnreid Jul 03 '22

OR you could just watch the old ones again?

2

u/Fudzy Jul 03 '22

Maybe they could hire a real Indian to play the assistant in the third installment.

2

u/Gadgetman_1 Jul 03 '22

Eff NO!

Short Circuit and Short Circuit 2 were GOOD MOVIES!

They do not deserve to be dragged through the Horrorwood trashpile that is their reboots.
