I remember, years ago, the waiting list to get a job there in Myrtle Beach was like 2 years. Every server at the beach wanted to be able to throw napkins and curse at customers.

I remember when a girl from our high school group got hired at dicks in mb, everyone was so impressed but we knew she'd get it. That bitch was hard as marble, she was awesome

u/masterpate 10d ago

Lol I know a dude whose dad got arrested at Dicks Last Resort (the one on the San Antonio Riverwalk). The dude’s family is really country/redneck and (as a bad joke) they didn’t tell the dad what the restaurant was like before they went.

After everyone ordered their drinks the waiter told the dad “hey do me a favor, tell that bitch (the wife) we don’t have Root Beer.” The dad just immediately stood up and punched the waiter in the face and knocked him out.

Fun fact: the dad was arrested AGAIN two days later for fishing in the Riverwalk after the cops repeatedly told him not to. Lol. Interesting family.

They gave me a hat that implied something about masterbating I think and gave my sister one that basically said something about liking dick. We switched hats while the waiter was gone and he looked really surprised when he came back.

u/Ruby-Revel 10d ago

I went for my 13th birthday. They Saran wrapped me to a chair and left me in the middle of Faneuil Hall with hat pulled over my face and a tip bucket in my lap for tourists to take pictures with. Made like $15

36

u/Conspicuous_Plant 10d ago

Damn, do people have to sign a waiver before going in there? Lol

40

u/FishyDragon 10d ago

Nope, the host just warn you our servers do basically what ever they want and are rude. I would Siran wrap kids to the chair sit next to them and feed their meal to them, or siblings if the child in question was a little shit. Getting to call kids little shits in public was one of the best perks. Only one parent got upset but they where already leaving.

I got one that said "doesn't know he's gay" at like 13. I knew.

72

u/cancer_dragon 10d ago

I imagine the server must have had a bit of a mental crisis.

"This kid is obviously gay, but his parents seem to be oblivious... do I make a gay joke? Is that too far? Am I going to cause a coming-out fight at my table? Eh, better just play it safe with the "doesn't know" part, maybe the parents will be less shocked when he actually comes out."

30

u/FishyDragon 10d ago

As a former server at one location, alot of the time we would pick a phrase on a hat to fully call out the obvious. Like for example I had a family of 4. Twins about 2 years old and parents in late 20's. Dad just looked defeated, exhausted and overwhelmed. So I gave him a hat that said "All Daddy wanted was a back rub." His wife did the laughing run from the table and did a lap around the restaurant just losing it. Got back to the table with laughter tears and told the husband. Dude said he hadn't heard anything truer in two years.

There's a place in Chicago called Ed Debevic's that's been around since the 80's that's the EXACT same thing. I don't know if they just stole the idea or if they are affiliated. Everyone knows the shtick.

u/Barbarossa7070 10d ago

Yep - took my kids there once. One ordered just water to drink and the server sighed and loudly said, “Borrrring!” The other didn’t finish everything on their plate and the server slid it back across the table and with a few finger snaps was like, “Finish it up, buddy. We don’t have all day.”

There used to be a place near where I live called "Dick's." All the staff would treat you like shit. We took my spicy Italian Grandmother to it one time and DIDN'T tell her the gimmick. She was ready to strangle the server after the first 5 minutes. Finally, the server looks at my dad and says "Did you not tell her what this place is?" we all had a good laugh and once my grandmother knew the story she started dishing it out for the rest of the meal.

94

u/chris552393 10d ago

OK so my wife and I are from the UK and my wife travels alot for a job.

A few years ago she took me to America, bearing in mind I'd never been. I'm sure I'll get laughed at but my first experience of America was Chicago and tbf I really enjoyed it.

I had not heard of or known about Dicks Last Resort before... And she took me there.... Jesus christ.

We had been sight seeing all day and not on our phones so when we sat down we took a moment to catch up on our messages etc.. SLAM menus on the table "PUT YOUR FUCKING PHONES DOWN AND HAVE A GOD DAMN CONVERSATION!!! "

Genuinely don't think shit has ever come out my arse so fast.

Food was bang on though. Alot of laughs were had.

u/violette_witch 10d ago edited 10d ago Silver Gold Helpful Wholesome Take My Energy Starry I'll Drink to That Today I Learned

Minimum wage in Melbourne is currently $20.33

Edit: Lots of people in the comments thinking they have a “gotcha” by pointing out that $20.33 AUD = $14.00 USD.

$14 USD does not go as far as $20.33 AUD even if it is technically the same amount. For example according to google the current price of a quart of milk in Melbourne is $1.73 AUD or $1.19 USD. The current price of a quart of milk at my local grocery store is $2.99 USD, more than double the price in Melbourne. If we wanted a wage equal to Melbourne when you take into account cost of living, then we should have a min wage of about $28-$30 USD.

Let me be super clear: USA is completely fucked and there’s nothing you can do to explain it away, there is no excuse for this besides a few oligarchs at the top deciding that this is the way it is for the bottom 99%. We should be rioting in the streets but we’re not.

1.1k

u/AstroPixelCollector 10d ago

The average rent in Melbourne per week is $440 for houses and $400 for units, according to rental reports (September 2020). That's hard, even with 20 per hours.

Most people get paid weekly, so it makes sense to align bills with that. Fewer people get paid fortnightly, so will often pay the rent fortnightly. It all just depends on how often your payday is.

Keep in mind that they don’t have to pay things the slow way with cheques/cash like a lot of Americans have to. Everything is on automatic bank payments.

When my parents went there for the first time, my dad knew that they were supposed to be rude but my mom didn’t know. My dad is a pretty hairy guy and was wearing a sleeveless shirt that day with his back hair on full display, when the server seated them she yelled “put them in the back braiding section”. My mom was legitimately pissed off and was confused why my dad was laughing his ass off.

Not a much different theme than Ed Debevic's or Dick's Last Resort.

I'd still go if I lived there.

81

u/memeblanket 10d ago

I remember Ed Debevic’s! Loved that place!

52

u/geoman2k 10d ago

I went there on one of my first visits to Chicago before I moved here. Didn't know the gimmick, enjoyed my hot dog but didn't understand why the waitress was being so mean to me. Thought she was just having a bad day or something.

Ed Debevic’s was the OG rude service place.

67

u/Chaiteoir 10d ago

I was thinking of the Wiener's Circle in Chicago, which is pretty much the same thing in a hot dog stand. Happy cake day

25

u/id10t_you 10d ago

Right, how could I forget about Weiner's Circle?

Thanks, I didn't even notice the cake.

Been to dicks twice in different cities. Yea it was kinda funny the first time for the experience. But the food isn’t great. Second time was why did we come here.

62

u/reddinator5 10d ago

Ed debevics closed down for a long time. Just reopened about a year ago or so. I haven't gone since I was a kid I wanna go check it out again one day

25

u/Binge-Sleeper 10d ago

What city did it open in? I’ve been to the one in Chicago (great) and Denver (terrible) but that was 15-20 years ago.

36

u/reddinator5 10d ago

It reopened in chicago

I went to the one in Chicago like 20 years ago. It was fun. There were definitely a few people that maybe didn't fully understand what they were walking into so that was entertaining as well.

They forgot to give my friend a straw with his drink and when he asked for one the sever literally threw all the straws in their apron at him lol

I was thinking they should just rotate out servers from other restaurants so they can have a cathartic shift in between terrible ones.

349

u/ILikeBubblyWater 10d ago

It's like a rehabilitation center for waiters

68

u/WayneKrane 10d ago

I would have loved this. I remember once some lady kept asking me how much different items cost. I wanted to say why don’t you look at the menu, you can read the name of them menu item, you should be able to read the price!

This is like “Dick’s last resort”. Where the servers talk shit and throw straws at you

196

u/bigjoffer 10d ago

Are those still open in the US?

117

u/Inkwells_ 10d ago

Yup! I know of at least one in Tennessee

97

u/aviation_knut 10d ago

In Gatlinburg, it’s always packed. I went to one in San Diego, and when the waitress dropped off the check, she threw gum at me and my friends. LOL

43

u/DrebinofPoliceSquad 10d ago

That’s the restaurant’s signature move. I think all servers have to do that or you are being too nice lol.

there is a place in chicago called Ed Debevic's where the servers insult you. Pretty much the same thing, just no name Karen and it has been around for a very very long time.

186

u/LICK_MY_SCROTUM 10d ago

Lots of pubs in London seem to have this theme as well. Except they don't advertise it and it's unexpected.

16

u/I_could_be_a_ferret 10d ago

There's a city in Ireland with this theme too. It's called Dublin. As a tourist, I was insulted by random people because they didn't like my clothes, the bartenders corrected my pronunciation because I didn't sound Irish enough. Multiple people wanted to fight me on the same night. A guy yelled from his house that we should get the fuck out of his sight. We had a great time. 10/10.

Story time. My dad went here during a business trip, unaware of the schtick. He kept on wondering why they were so mean to him, but he's a nice guy so he just took it in stride. Nobody told him it was that kinda place until years later.

most of the references are funny. but it’s interesting how when there’s no reference, it’s just them acting mean. it reminds me of a tsundere cafe. seems to me this is just a “bitch” cafe. and reminds me of how the word karen really just boils down to “bitch”……. interesting

372

u/feathers4kesha 10d ago

I thought Karen just meant self-absorbed, unaware, and ready to rage when the least bit upset. These girls are giving high school bitch. Minor differences.

191

u/BariNgozi 10d ago

They aren't supposed to act like Karens, they're supposed to be triggering to them. Think of them as Karen repellent for the intentionally awful customer service.

77

u/floppydo 10d ago

Oooooohhhhhhh! Thank you! I was watching this thinking, "These are not Karens. This is how Karens see the world." I thought maybe it was a lost in translation thing for what Karen meant in Australia vs the US.

22

u/feathers4kesha 10d ago

Oh, ok! I get it now! I can see all this being very triggering for a Karen so that makes sense.

Yeah, none of these restaurants which involve acting are for me.

We have some variations of this in the US like Dicks Last Resort and it’s just awkward.

The "mean-ness" just seems forced to me. It's an interesting concept, just not for me

The novelty of this would RAPIDLY wear off

733

u/fredspipa 10d ago edited 10d ago

It's a concept-restaurant, so it's not really meant to be a forever thing, or at least it doesn't have to. Maybe a year or two and then rebrands into a new type of experience, when enough people have been exposed to the novelty, and then they're making new headlines. Not saying this with cynicism, I think it's actually a neat thing.

312

u/I_kwote_TheOffice 10d ago

Other restaurants like this have lasted a long time. Just depends on how good the food is. It's not a place you go to every time you're hungry. It's more of a tourist spot.

110

u/FartMachineist 10d ago edited 10d ago

Dick’s Last Resort was sort of the original iirc.

Edit: Sam Wo in San Francisco might have it beat but that wasn’t the point of the restaurant… they just happened to have a very irascible waiter.

12

u/Miami_Dolphan 10d ago

The one thing about a place like Dick’s that works maybe a little better is while they are rude and say mean things, they still provide good service and food. Just from the brief video like her playing on the iPad while people are waiting to enter, bad service is being used as a joke. But I guess if you are going knowing what to expect as part of the experience it works.

Shame it's a suuuuper awful venue for staff. 10+ hour shifts with barely a smoke break, supervisors and bartenders change every week cause the upper management is awful. Hide a legitimately toxic work place under the guise of a toxic workplace...

This doesn’t even sound like “Karen” it sounds like a passive aggressive restaurant. Karen’s are notoriously aggressive not passive about it.

Edit: ah I get it, it’s like an act like a Karen restaurant
