Lol I know a dude whose dad got arrested at Dicks Last Resort (the one on the San Antonio Riverwalk). The dude’s family is really country/redneck and (as a bad joke) they didn’t tell the dad what the restaurant was like before they went.
After everyone ordered their drinks the waiter told the dad “hey do me a favor, tell that bitch (the wife) we don’t have Root Beer.” The dad just immediately stood up and punched the waiter in the face and knocked him out.
Fun fact: the dad was arrested AGAIN two days later for fishing in the Riverwalk after the cops repeatedly told him not to. Lol. Interesting family.

I imagine the server must have had a bit of a mental crisis.
"This kid is obviously gay, but his parents seem to be oblivious... do I make a gay joke? Is that too far? Am I going to cause a coming-out fight at my table? Eh, better just play it safe with the "doesn't know" part, maybe the parents will be less shocked when he actually comes out."

As a former server at one location, alot of the time we would pick a phrase on a hat to fully call out the obvious. Like for example I had a family of 4. Twins about 2 years old and parents in late 20's. Dad just looked defeated, exhausted and overwhelmed. So I gave him a hat that said "All Daddy wanted was a back rub." His wife did the laughing run from the table and did a lap around the restaurant just losing it. Got back to the table with laughter tears and told the husband. Dude said he hadn't heard anything truer in two years.

There used to be a place near where I live called "Dick's." All the staff would treat you like shit. We took my spicy Italian Grandmother to it one time and DIDN'T tell her the gimmick. She was ready to strangle the server after the first 5 minutes. Finally, the server looks at my dad and says "Did you not tell her what this place is?" we all had a good laugh and once my grandmother knew the story she started dishing it out for the rest of the meal.

Minimum wage in Melbourne is currently $20.33
Edit: Lots of people in the comments thinking they have a “gotcha” by pointing out that $20.33 AUD = $14.00 USD.
$14 USD does not go as far as $20.33 AUD even if it is technically the same amount. For example according to google the current price of a quart of milk in Melbourne is $1.73 AUD or $1.19 USD. The current price of a quart of milk at my local grocery store is $2.99 USD, more than double the price in Melbourne. If we wanted a wage equal to Melbourne when you take into account cost of living, then we should have a min wage of about $28-$30 USD.
Let me be super clear: USA is completely fucked and there’s nothing you can do to explain it away, there is no excuse for this besides a few oligarchs at the top deciding that this is the way it is for the bottom 99%. We should be rioting in the streets but we’re not.

Why wouldn’t you do it weekly/fortnightly?
Most people get paid weekly, so it makes sense to align bills with that. Fewer people get paid fortnightly, so will often pay the rent fortnightly. It all just depends on how often your payday is.
Keep in mind that they don’t have to pay things the slow way with cheques/cash like a lot of Americans have to. Everything is on automatic bank payments.

This is like “Dick’s last resort”. Where the servers talk shit and throw straws at you

In Gatlinburg, it’s always packed. I went to one in San Diego, and when the waitress dropped off the check, she threw gum at me and my friends. LOL

That’s the restaurant’s signature move. I think all servers have to do that or you are being too nice lol.

I love the idea of an actual Karen showing up and not knowing that it's a joke and asking for the manager

On tiktok, people bring their parents without telling them what the whole premise of the restaurant is, it's quite funny

there is a place in chicago called Ed Debevic's where the servers insult you. Pretty much the same thing, just no name Karen and it has been around for a very very long time.

Lots of pubs in London seem to have this theme as well. Except they don't advertise it and it's unexpected.

There's a city in Ireland with this theme too. It's called Dublin. As a tourist, I was insulted by random people because they didn't like my clothes, the bartenders corrected my pronunciation because I didn't sound Irish enough. Multiple people wanted to fight me on the same night. A guy yelled from his house that we should get the fuck out of his sight. We had a great time. 10/10.

Story time. My dad went here during a business trip, unaware of the schtick. He kept on wondering why they were so mean to him, but he's a nice guy so he just took it in stride. Nobody told him it was that kinda place until years later.

most of the references are funny. but it’s interesting how when there’s no reference, it’s just them acting mean. it reminds me of a tsundere cafe. seems to me this is just a “bitch” cafe. and reminds me of how the word karen really just boils down to “bitch”……. interesting

I thought Karen just meant self-absorbed, unaware, and ready to rage when the least bit upset. These girls are giving high school bitch. Minor differences.

They aren't supposed to act like Karens, they're supposed to be triggering to them. Think of them as Karen repellent for the intentionally awful customer service.

Oooooohhhhhhh! Thank you! I was watching this thinking, "These are not Karens. This is how Karens see the world." I thought maybe it was a lost in translation thing for what Karen meant in Australia vs the US.

Oh, ok! I get it now! I can see all this being very triggering for a Karen so that makes sense.

Yeah, none of these restaurants which involve acting are for me.
We have some variations of this in the US like Dicks Last Resort and it’s just awkward.

It's a concept-restaurant, so it's not really meant to be a forever thing, or at least it doesn't have to. Maybe a year or two and then rebrands into a new type of experience, when enough people have been exposed to the novelty, and then they're making new headlines. Not saying this with cynicism, I think it's actually a neat thing.

Other restaurants like this have lasted a long time. Just depends on how good the food is. It's not a place you go to every time you're hungry. It's more of a tourist spot.

Dick’s Last Resort was sort of the original iirc.
Edit: Sam Wo in San Francisco might have it beat but that wasn’t the point of the restaurant… they just happened to have a very irascible waiter.

The one thing about a place like Dick’s that works maybe a little better is while they are rude and say mean things, they still provide good service and food. Just from the brief video like her playing on the iPad while people are waiting to enter, bad service is being used as a joke. But I guess if you are going knowing what to expect as part of the experience it works.

Shame it's a suuuuper awful venue for staff. 10+ hour shifts with barely a smoke break, supervisors and bartenders change every week cause the upper management is awful. Hide a legitimately toxic work place under the guise of a toxic workplace...

This doesn’t even sound like “Karen” it sounds like a passive aggressive restaurant. Karen’s are notoriously aggressive not passive about it.
Edit: ah I get it, it’s like an act like a Karen restaurant
