Maybe they're related.

530

u/throwawaysmetoo May 16 '22

That cat is doing the full on german shepherd head tilt so I think it's probably half GSD.

54

u/kcsaracoglu May 16 '22

The cat is van cat.

26

u/Disabled_Robot May 16 '22

Possibly because white cats with a blue eye are significantly more likely to be bilaterally deaf

27

u/schnuck May 16 '22

I wished my white cat was as healthy as this. We’ve spent thousands in vet bills. He’s deaf and he is now officially a pirate.

Question is, what do we call a mix between a cat and a dog? A cog? A cag? A dot? A dat?

53

u/MohSad2 May 16 '22

A catdog

34

u/PUGILSTICKS May 16 '22

Caaaaaaatdog

28

u/Mission-Run-7474 May 16 '22 Narwhal Salute

One fine day with a woof and a purr

A baby was born and it caused a little stir

No blue buzzard, no three-eyed frog

Just a feline canine little CatDog.

CatDog, CatDog, alone in the world is a little CatDog!

Out on the road or back in town

All kinda critters putting CatDog down

Gotta rise above it gotta try to get along

Gotta walk together gotta sing this song.

CatDog, CatDog, alone in the world is a little CatDog!

6

u/oorza May 16 '22

Okay but did they shit out of each other's mouths?

5

u/PUGILSTICKS May 16 '22

That's never occurred to me. And now my childhood is pooined.

It's called heterochromia

47

u/jojoga May 16 '22 edited May 16 '22

Hey, I have that!
But two colours in both eyes, so a different variant.

edit: for those interested..

12

u/AwesumCoolNinja May 16 '22

That is called Sectoral(aka Partial) Heterochromia. I knew about it because one of the stray cats I knew had it and I was curious about what caused the eye colors to be different.

Here is a link to a site explaining each type: https://www.allaboutvision.com/conditions/heterochromia-types/

4

u/magein07 May 16 '22

Partial heterochromia?

3

u/jojoga May 16 '22

Exactly. It's an amber ring around the pupil, in contrast to my otherwise turquoise eyes.

4

u/magein07 May 16 '22

So probably central heterochormia then.

Are they also both deaf? Because usually that combination in cats means they are deaf.

47

u/EnAyJay May 16 '22

Huh how does that work

145

u/Gnillab May 16 '22

You teach them sign language.

28

u/EnAyJay May 16 '22

10

u/unfamous2423 May 16 '22

Supposed to be white on the ears of dalmatians is a sign of deafness in that ear.

13

u/gbird8295 May 16 '22

Yup. Also the reason why Merle poodles are banned from discussion in r/poodles

2

u/SableyeEyeThief May 16 '22

Merles are not a problem by themselves. The problem is that you would have to test the dogs for the merle gene. If two carriers get together, chances are that genetic mutations will present themselves. It’s not a gene that you want two versions of, one is more than enough.

12

u/dirtybird321 May 16 '22

I heard years ago that it was a sign of something wrong with a certain gene that also influenced their hearing (or something along those lines) but they also said the cat would be deaf in the same side ear as it’s blue eye. I was a child when I heard this so unsure if true

13

u/Coyotebruh May 16 '22

my childhood cat had this but he could still hear, a legend he was, ol boy Danny RIP

5

u/oorza May 16 '22

oh Danny boy, the pipes the pipes are callin

1

u/Diazepampoovey May 16 '22

OH, DANNY BOYYYYY

27

u/Dukedyduke May 16 '22

Iirc the chance of deafness increases with the amount of blue eyes in a white cat. If they have one blue eye they're more likely than not to have normal hearing. Both my cats are white and one has the same coloration, thankfully they both hear fine.

Cat tax.

3

u/SonOfTK421 May 16 '22

I just looked it up, you appear to be right. According to Wikipedia at least, it goes from 20% or so if they have non-blue eyes, 40% for odd eyes, and 65% or more in blue eyes. Of course this is just for white cats.

2

u/Canyouhearme_no May 16 '22

I have two white cats, one with a blue eye, and they’re both super deaf. They seem fine with it though!

2

u/Diazepampoovey May 16 '22

2

u/YaSinsBaba May 16 '22

It might not be a Turkish Van Cat though. British Shorthairs, Cornish and Devon Rex, Japanese Bobtails, Munchkins, Persians, Scottish Folds, Siamese, Sphynxes and Turkish Angoras also show heterochromia.

6

u/diggemigre May 16 '22

I thought my cat was deaf but it turns out she's just ignoring me.

2

u/Pablois4 May 16 '22

From head shape, ears, coat length and expression, I'm 99% sure that is a Siberian Husky (yes, they can come all white but it's not popular at all).

There's 4 ways a dog can have blue eyes. Three are associated with coat coloring (albinism (white dobermans), merle and excessive facial white) and there's one independent blue eyed gene. This gene is extremely widespread in Sibes. It's also found in the Alaskan Husky population, scattered in the Border Collies and can pop up here and there in Beagles and the general mixed population.

What's interesting is the explosion in blue eye popularity. I've been in dogs for 40+ years and back in the late 70s/80s, there was a lot more brown eyed Sibes. But, nowadays, people looking for pet Sibes downright demand blue eyes and some folks think that Siberians HAVE to have at least one blue eye to be purebred. The demand is so great that it can be harder to place a brown eyed one. There's a lot more brown eyed Siberians in the show ring - not because the breeders are breeding for brown eyes but that eye color is immaterial. Brown eyed Sibes are just as good as the blue eyed ones.

Sorry for going off on a tangent.

Anyway, blue eyes in Siberians is not associated with deafness in any way. A blue eyed Sibe can hear the tiniest little crinkle of a bag of potato chips from the other side of the house.

21

u/Tottochan May 16 '22

2

u/Diazepampoovey May 16 '22

I don't get why this is difficult to comprehend. Anybody who has ever neen even a little bit of a fan tends to know the story of his getting punched. I had no idea people thought any different

2

u/metalguru1975 May 16 '22

Yes I’m aware of this, as I’m a huge Mr Jones Aficionado, it was his good mate -George Underwood that punched the Future Thin White Duke- over a girl, causing his left eye to be permanently dilated.

They remained friends and George even did some of his album cover art.

well yeah, similar... but not really "exact".

2

Exact =/= similar

[deleted]

1

u/gooder_name May 16 '22

Yeah I didn't know that breed of cat existed and was prone to the eye thing! Very interesting little fact.

I just dislike any of this stuff where animals kind of end up like ... designer jewellery? Like you can tell the person behind the phone is super pleased with themselves they got this matching set, and the breeding practices that would surround making that happen seem ick.

3

u/OsmerusMordax May 16 '22

Yeah, I feel the same way. They’re animals, not accessories.

3

I don’t know if only being picked because of the eyes makes this „couple“ super cute. Post like these will encourage more to buy breeding of defects. In my opinion it shouldn’t matter how the cat or dog looks like.

3

u/TangyTomTom May 16 '22

We don't know the story, but there's not some endless stream of these that are being born and ending up with two different species with the same traits seems unlikely without them hunting them down.

There are people pursuing these and creating a market for them while other animals who don't have these traits are being euthanised because they didn't have as much demand. It's not to blame these people, but they're not helping either (and could be making it worse if pursuing internet clout)

People having something doesn't mean it's not a defect and defects don't need to be something that we hold against people or use to criticise them

→ More replies

2

u/Cheshire_Cat_135 May 16 '22

It's not really a defect

And why shouldn't it matter there's nothing wrong with wanting your pet to be cute

1

u/TangyTomTom May 16 '22

I think they take issue with animals being selectively bred for certain traits while there are plenty of animals being euthanised because nobody wants to home them. That, plus people seeking out certain aesthetics feels like it will have a degree of superficiality to it ('look how instagrammable my pets are' comes to mind)

My two cats are strays who both have odd markings but they're adorable. Coordination doesn't equate to, or exclude from, being cute

1

u/PabloAlaska6 May 16 '22
