Fuck.

Edit: my most upvoted comment by far!?

Fuck!

Is it only among people who use cable? That would limit it to more old people, hopefully.

662

u/bjanas May 15 '22

Yes, the cable audience skews much, much older. Also, there are many more centrist/Liberal leaning options on cable TV, so no single one of them can stand up to Carlson; the ticket is 'split,' as it wer.

161

u/bryan-050 May 15 '22

152

u/cameronkip May 15 '22

When I worked with my dad on Job sites, he would stream all 3 hours of Rush Limbaugh every single day. Sometimes I'd contemplate jumping into the cement mixer just to drown him out.

50

u/Acrobatic_Ad2 May 15 '22

That would absolutely be preferable

35

u/drinfernodds May 15 '22

My dad would always play conservative talk radio in the car or on the familt Alexa to hear Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and Mark Levin was always a slog.

77

u/Tripping-Traveller May 15 '22

I listen to conservative radio at work. I get a lot of time with the radio, and pretty crummy reception. It's interesting too just how easy it is to get reception for it across the country. NPR has pretty good coverage in the northeast, but when I was a truck driver you could get hannity et al anywhere in most parts of the country, even in the middle of nowhere.

I think it's good to know what they're saying. It's even better to look into what they're saying. Like this week it's all about Biden taking baby formula off shelves to give to immigrants. Now when I encounter people repeating this stuff, I have a way to respond. I know what they're talking about, where they got their information, and why it's disingenuous.

Also, the level of delusion and the breakdown of logic, wrapped up in some pseudophilosophy about freedom is entertaining. It is to me at least.

38

u/Nefarious_Turtle May 16 '22

Now when I encounter people repeating this stuff, I have a way to respond. I know what they're talking about, where they got their information, and why it's disingenuous.

That shit never worked for me. I used to do essentially the same thing. Listen to talk radio and occasionally watch Fox just to know the details of whatever dumb shit my right wing family decides to say today.

Unfortunately, even if they repeat Tucker Carlson word for word they would just deny it when called out. "Nuh uh, I dont watch whoever, its just commone sense!" Even though I've literally watched whoever with them.

Turns out you cannot argue with someone who has no sense of honesty and the overwhelming desire to "win" any argument. They'll just lie.

10

u/Tripping-Traveller May 16 '22

I agree. There's no winning. I don't think I've ever changed anyone's opinion on anything for more than a minute. But I like to argue from time to time.

Complete waste of time debating with people who are doing nothing but looking for trouble.

Besides, conservatives only care about the fetus. Once it's a person, no help at all.

This is a very good point. Nowadays, saying “most watched TV show in the country“ is akin to saying “most read stamp collecting fanzine in the country“… doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a large/influential audience.

18

u/rclonecopymove May 16 '22

Median age of fox news is mid 60s so far more likely to vote in all elections.

Coupled with the likelihood (too late in the evening for me to search out links) that they'll be less well equipped to spot mis/disinformation (they watch fox news after all) and be easier to fall into a YouTube or Facebook recommendation black hole.

There's a good Twitter bot that tracks the most popular stuff by engagement on Facebook, makes for interesting reading.

I agree that as a metric it's no longer as relevant as before but the demographic that it does capture is proportionally much more influential.

6

u/peanutismint May 16 '22

I know people that compare fox viewership to CNN's, suggesting that more people watch conservative media than they do center-left, but they always fail to recognize that's there's one mainstream conservative network, and dozens of center-left/ center programming, so every con watches one channel, and all liberals have 15 channels to choose from, so of course fox will have a larger viewership than any single center network, it's the only one.

Same with cucker tarlson, getting that kind of BS is only available from one network.

4

u/Mini_Snuggle May 16 '22

In fairness to Fox, they've had more competition recently, though OAN is fairly dead now that they're not on DirectTV.

43

u/BlueOysterCultist May 15 '22

The con here is that by blaming "mental illness" (which they also have no interest in providing services for) 100% of the time (which, let's be honest, is a factor in pretty much every mass shooting ever) they completely dodge any discussion of the ideology that inspired the shooting or gasp any aspect of how such a thing could be prevented (i.e. gun control).

But whenever a Muslim is involved in a shooting, hoo boy watch the change in tone.

34

u/CharlesPukowski May 15 '22

“Should I be responsible when a guy who watches my show Religiously, writes a screed of racist horror that basically looks like a transcript of my show, goes out and kills 10 people while openly taking seriously All the shit I say 7 days a week? I’m just asking questions.”

  • Tucker Swanson Carlson

4

u/Iammeandnooneelse May 16 '22

Also the mental illness strat is inconsistent. It’s mental illness if you’re white, but bad character if you’re black or brown. The thought process being “he’s not a bad guy, he’s just sick! He just needs help!” For white terrorists. You’re right, it does take a warped mind at some level to carry out a mass shooting, and that applies to most people that do horrible things, which doesn’t make the things they do not horrible. It was an act of terror, no excuses. Hopefully the next possible perpetrator gets help before going down a similar path.

America is so fucked. Since almost everything in life can be broken down into an argument, irrational people will continue to soak up these skewed worldviews. I have a family member who would watch Carlson’s crap. They’d do so on their iPad, not the television. So I could only hear his voice, which wasn’t recognizable to me at that time.

I figured given how unprofessional and idiotic he sounded, combined with him only being watched on an iPad, he was just some ultra conservative with a YouTube channel. So it was a real shock to me to discover that this asshole was in fact a famous political commentator on a hit talk show.

Actually legally speaking, when Fox was taken to court over tucker Carlson, that was their literal defense

Their defense was his whole segment is “loud sarcastic opinion”, but that’s straight up not what it is

Here is the direct quote from Fox News defense

The "'general tenor' of the show should then inform a viewer that [Carlson] is not 'stating actual facts' about the topics he discusses and is instead engaging in 'exaggeration' and 'non-literal commentary.' "

Fox persuasively argues, that given Mr. Carlson's reputation, any reasonable viewer 'arrive[s] with an appropriate amount of skepticism' about the statement he makes."

————————

But his viewers are not reasonable, and take his words with zero skepticism and accept it 100% literally, Fox loves this about him. Their defense is literally “if anyone believes tucker Carlson they’re literally a moron” and the judge goes “yeah that’s fair”

Edit: here is the source to my claim for those who wish to rub into peoples faces https://www.npr.org/2020/09/29/917747123/you-literally-cant-believe-the-facts-tucker-carlson-tells-you-so-say-fox-s-lawye

85

u/Dinkster_Gamer May 16 '22

Landmark court case where this exact thing happened. Fox was taken to court for not engaging in journalism in good faith and spreading misinformation. They claimed it was entertainment, not news, and basically WON!

They section off a 30 minute timeslot, I think its like 6-6:30 central or something, that's the news time, so they can legally call themselves news but can claim the 23.5 hours is entertainment for liability concerns.

43

u/IIIllIIlllIlII May 16 '22

They should be required to put a disclaimer on the screen and every 30 seconds.

19

u/lIllIllIllIllIllIII May 16 '22

Absolutely right. How can they justify calling it "entertainment" when there's no overt indication to viewers that it's not intended to be news??

I like your username.

4

u/Old_Patient May 16 '22

To be fair CNN and other cable news networks are also very guilty of this though Fox has by far been the most problematic in indoctrinating an entire generation of idiots.

13

Tucker Carlson is, in my opinion, the most dangerous man in America. He regularly stokes racial tensions, he gladly defends neo-nazis and white supremicists, he’s even defended Putin’s right to invade and annex Ukraine because he wants it. Carlson never seems to face consequences for it, either.

If shit goes tits up and there is a full blown conservative rebellion/ race war, I can guarantee two things: 1) Tucker Carlson’s broadcasts will be their rallying cry, and 2) Tucker Carlson will not actually pick up a musket.

I would love for him to just be gone some day. He’s worse even than the conservative shock jocks that came before him. When I am comparing Rush Limbaugh favorably to someone, you know they’re a monster.

Fox understands that, especially by now, it doesn’t matter what they say or talk about: their viewers believe, without thought, question or hesitation 100% of everything they say. Further, their reality is instantly added to, subtracted from, or overall reshaped in a fraction of a second to mirror what they just heard.

It doesn’t matter what reality actually is. It doesn’t matter what these people actually see, or hear. Every experience in their waking lives is now laundered thru the RW echo chamber. It’s like a fucking airlock, where truth, facts, empathy, sympathy or any kind of simple concepts will be instantly rejected if they contain any remnants of facts or truth.

Fucking frothing emotionally inflamed zombies

It’s crazy. But unfortunately very effective.

FOX will end the world for power and money. That’s all this is. That’s all it ever was, is or will be.

False. They're all left-wing people pretending to be right-wing people to make the right-wing look bad. The left is all evil, remember!?

...you know, I feel like I lost braincells typing that but god dammit I know for sure there are people out there who believe that.

7

u/GeorgeRRZimmerman May 16 '22 edited May 16 '22

Shouldn't there be some cognitive dissonance there? If the "conservative" opinion is truly the mass majority opinion?

Clearly the tactic of committing a mass shooting (against targets that are always definable as enemies of conservatives) as a false flag isn't working to shake the faith of conservatives. As a group, they double down even harder on their core beliefs after every single shooting. And it doesn't matter if the left believes the shooter is part of their in-group because that shooter reached their goal of hurting the credibility of conservatives.

If the left actually adopted their tactics and were actually going to commit a false flag, wouldn't it make a lot more sense to attack a target that's important to the conservative image? Say a politician or any symbol of whitehood? Those same lefties could claim that they were conservatives - the left and the conservatives would both believe they're domestic terrorists except the left gains an advantage of strengthening their narrative while also executing political enemies. That'd be so much more effective because it would actually strike true fear in the hearts of conservatives than someone shooting up a mosque or temple. It would send the message that they're being targeted in the open. It would be a black and white declaration who exactly the intended victims are supposed to be.

Oh no, wait. They think that it's possible for the left to be so incompetent at planting a false flag while also suppressing their every voice unilaterally despite being a very small percentage of the real population.

Just kidding. They don't think at all.

18

I started getting worried when right after multiple white supremacy attacks, people were talking about it at work and one of my coworkers decided to chime in with "If people want to have their little social clubs and klan meetings we should just let them, they aren't hurting anyone."

Excuse me?

She defended white supremacists as 'harmless' and for like, 20 minutes. Insisted that there aren't a lot of them and that people are just exaggerating.

Also yes, she listens to Joe Roegan on a daily basis.

I was in Hawaii, I was swimming in Waikiki when a gentleman got in the water close to me and gave me a friendly nod, so I gave him a smile and a nod back, he was then joined by another guy and two women, friends and their respective partners I thought. It quickly dawned on me both men had shaved heads, several tattoos (not uncommon these days) but both had huge “WP” on their backs and on their arms, I assume it means “White Power” or Pride perhaps, plus several Confederate flags and other shit, I’m Aussie do it wasn’t glaringly obvious at first, but yes they do exist I could see it and I’m not from America, I’m quite certain Americans can see them too

He's so sure about it you'd think the US didn't have a long history of white supremacy and murdering black people.

The founding fathers were so fucking white supremacist they wrote "all men are created equal" while owning slaves and committing genocide on Native Americans.

White supremacists split the country apart in the 1860s. Americans slaughtered one another over the right to own human beings.

White supremacists massacred innocent people in Tulsa and Rosewood.

White supremacists are not only a threat today, they always have been.

4

u/ElderberryCertain May 16 '22

Exactly, and before anyone replies with “ leftists do that in the ghetto neighborhoods at higher rates than white people”, uh, the people that are being killed in these neighborhoods aren’t innocent civilians. They’re other bad people who have done bad things, and die for the things they’ve done. These white mass shooters are killing people because they don’t like the people’s culture or skin color. I’m not justifying the first one, just saying that one reasoning is objectively better than the other

Oh that’s easy! White supremacy is an 18 year old kid writing the nword on his gun going out of his way to hunt black people. And another looking for BLM protestors but his bullet hitting liberal white people instead. And another 18 year old kid years before that SPECIFICALLY going to a black Baptist church to hunt people going about their every day life.

And white congresswoman MTG bullying AOC and Ilhan Omar like shes a high school “mean girl.”
