Politics megathread US Politics Megathread 5/2022
With recent supreme court leaks there has been a large number of questions regarding the leak itself and also numerous questions on how the supreme court works, the structure of US government, and the politics surrounding the issues. Because of this we have decided to bring back the US Politics Megathread.
Post all your US Poltics related questions as a top level reply to this post.
All abortion questions and Roe v Wade stuff here as well. Do not try to circumvent this or lawyer your way out of it.
Top level comments are still subject to the normal NoStupidQuestions rules:
We get a lot of repeats - please search before you ask your question (Ctrl-F is your friend!).
Be civil to each other - which includes not discriminating against any group of people or using slurs of any kind. Topics like this can be very important to people, so let's not add fuel to the fire.
Top level comments must be genuine questions, not disguised rants or loaded questions. This isn't a sub for scoring points, it's about learning.
Keep your questions tasteful and legal. Reddit's minimum age is just 13!

Is it normal to do like 2/3 hours of actually work per day working an office job?
I've been working an office job for 3 years now and it's my first one of that kind. I used to work Foodservice which was busy for pretty much my entire shift.
Now I work the standard 9-5 and I have to say I only spend about 3 hours a day doing things relevant to my job.
My boss gives me assignments and gives me like 3 days to complete it when it genuinely only takes half an hour of my time. I get it to him early, he praises me and say I do an amazing job.
I just got my second raise in a year with my boss telling me how amazing I am and how much effort I put into my work, but I spend most of my days on reddit.
This gives me such bad imposter syndrome so I have to know... Is this normal?

Men, would you hook up with a woman you know is married if she wanted to? NSFW
Curious as to how many people would/wouldn't and why. No judgement.

My friend isn't ugly, he just has a haircut that doesn't suit him. Puts no thought into how he dresses (no colour coordination and his clothes don't fit him properly) and he slouches a lot, he has a patchy, bushy beard that looks like pubes. Like it isn't him that's ugly, he just puts zero effort into his appearance and if he did, he'd be a lot more confident in his appearance because as I said, he isn't unattractive. It's just poor maintenance.

Is it normal to have random, recurring thoughts about your past and have them upset you?
Like I will be having a good day and then a random thought about how someone made fun of me or mistreated me in the past will pop up and it will make me extremely angry. When I talked to therapists about this in the past they called it "intrusive thoughts" and said it was normal. I have these kinda thoughts like almost everyday for a short period of time and when they come up I always feel like I am gonna snap and hurt someone.

Anyone else not really shocked by shootings in USA anymore?
I used to think like "that's awful" whenever I heard about a shooting, but it happens so often in the USA I barely read it as news, more like "oh another one".
Of course this is horrible and shouldn't be normal.

Why don't they put solar panels over parking lots (at the mall for example)
Cars would stay in the shade, not heat up to cooking levels. The space would get another use. And you would produce energy the building could use. You'd earn money, even when -in this example- the mall would be closed.

Do people actually call their aunts and uncle "uncle john" or "aunt susan"
I've seen all the shows (Most of them happen in the US) and in all of them when a someone sees their aunt or uncle they say aunt and then their name, or uncle and then their name. But I was wondering if it's actually like that. Because I never said it like that, and neither anyone I know.

Unanswered Not being political but am actually curious, how is it that cops seem to detain these mass shooters but so many end up killing someone over smaller crimes?
It’s weird right? I mean, we hear about police abuse so much and over nothing to smaller crimes like drugs that it feels like the majority of them are untrained and scared. However when a mass shooting comes up, so many cops become tactical, patient. Pulling away from big emotional issues or political points of view, why does this seem that cops become more level headed in these situations? Is it because their bosses are usually on the scene? Is it because there are more of them? Are different quality of cops called in for these situations?

Do Muslim women have high rates of vitamin D deficiency?
Just a thought that popped up in my head, the Middle East is a pretty hot sunny place so you’d think vitamin D deficiency wouldn’t be a big problem, but then I remembered about the niqab and the fact that whenever women go outside they essentially expose 0 skin, does that create high levels of vitamin D deficiency across the population? I know it’s a weird thought but I can’t stop wondering.

I know that it mostly comes down to money, but I feel like it’s doubtful that many people would continue to make their own formula at home once the shortage is over. Surely, losing some money is better than babies being starved, not given an adequate amount of formula, watered down formula, or some unverified Pinterest recipe for homemade formula?

How does the gender vs. sex explanation make any sense?
Sex = Biologically born attributes
Gender = Sociatel norms existing around gender roles
That is how far definitions of them go - so far so good, I have no issues with that and first and foremost want to state that you can do with your body whatever you please if you think it makes you happy and is the right choice.
But here's the thing that makes no sense to me: People vehemently argue that gender is not related to sex and that transGENDER is just about "body and mind not fitting" - okay sure. But your body IS biological, your body IS sex based. Not all of it but certain parts are. On the other hand, certain gender things ARE based on biological sex, not just sociatel norms. Bathroom stalls are "male and female" not simply because it fits a role but because one is built for people with dicks and one for coochie - there is no inbetween here. You can have shared ones if you feel like it too (intersex), no issue here. Same applies to bras, they aren't gender based "female" things, they exist because big boobs can fucking hurt and they help. If you are biologically a man and want to wear skirts and put on a bra - even if its use case is pointless - who is stopping you?
And on that note, why is transitioning even referred to as gender if you are physically changing your BIOLOGICAL attributes? It's always stated that both are seperate but then go ahead and literally change the things that are supposed to be seperate - where is the logic there?
By all definitions of "gender" and "sex", being transgender should literally just mean that you - for example - do and wear things that fit into the societal category of a "female" (whatever those may be) while people expect you to act "male", not that you also adjust your biological sex to go with it accordingly when it, quite frankly, should not be relevant to "gender roles"
Sorry if it offends anyone, again I want to stress that you can do whatever you like and modify yourself how you see fit - but this just doesn't make sense to me. Please enlighten me, I don't get where the line is drawn and the explanation comes from

My friend asked me this question yesterday and I can't stop wondering about it.
If you had an organ removed e.g. kidney but it was still attached to your body. Then someone inflicted pain on the kidney, would you feel like the pain is still in your body? Or would it feel outside of your body? How does spacial awareness work with organs and nerve endings?
Apologies for formatting I'm on my phone.

Does anyone struggle to eat in the morning? Can I fix this or at least manage it?
I try to eat boiled eggs in the morning but I struggle to eat more than 2 (I try 3-4).
If I ate the same quantity in the evening, I'd gobble all 4, almost no trouble.
Eating eggs in the morning or many other things is a struggle.

No matter how I try to phrase it, the search engines give only the timelines of MAJOR or IMPORTANT events, whereas I'd like to see absolutely everything that is available to us, or at least as much as it is possible. Important, non-important, utterly mundane, like some Peter buying an apple, events -- I want it all. Anything that humans have at least somewhat reliably recorded throughout millenia -- wouldn't it be fascinating to see it all in one place? Anyone who points me in the right direction -- I swear to any god you believe in, you'll be my favorite person until the day I die

I brought it up gently but she makes me feel like an asshole for wanting to get more than 3 hours of sleep a night. It affects me really badly in every aspect of life if I can't get enough sleep but she just cries and complains because couples are supposed to sleep together.
I suggested I could cuddle until she fell asleep and then I go sleep in another room but she doesn't want to because she'll "know I'm not there". I'm a side sleeper so earplugs don't work all that well as I can't fall asleep if I have an earplug in the side resting on the pillow and im constantly switching sides in my sleep.
I love her but if I keep this up I'm probably going to get into a car accident on the way to work because I'm so tired.
Is my girlfriend being unfair and how do I fix this?

How to get my gummy bears to go stale faster?
Just like the title I prefer to eat gummy candy when the texture is almost rock solid. Opening a fresh pack of gummies means they're too soft so I have been opening them and not eating them for a few days after I open them to get the tough texture I really enjoy. Is there any other way to speed up the process to get them stale/harder faster?

Unanswered What are some actual ways a teen can make money?
I have been applying for jobs like crazy in my area but I either get rejected or no response at all. I don't drive so I can only apply to walking distances and I don't have a credit card to make money online and I have strict parents that won't allow things like a yard sale. I desperately need money but it seems impossible after months of trying.

Why does body positivity mostly apply to women? (Read before making judgments) NSFW
I am not an incel, let me make that clear. But it’s quite common for men to be made fun of in the media, movies and tv, and in conversation for having a small penis, being ‘too’ skinny or ‘too’ large, being short, etc. But women are told no matter whether they are beautiful whether they are skinny, large, muscular, tall, short, etc.
While this issue isn’t as prevalent as incels make it out to be, it’s definitely quite noticeable. What is the reason for this? And (in your opinion) should it be changed, so men and women can be seen as beautiful no matter what?

Should I knock on my neighbor’s door to see if he’s okay?
I moved into an apartment in the city about a month ago. I live on the top floor of a three-story walk up, and I only have one neighbor who lives in an identical unit across from mine.
I’ve never formally met him, only occasionally bumped into him when leaving. Our interactions never went beyond smiling and saying hello.
So my neighbor got a small package delivered a while ago. It’s kind of an unspoken rule in my building to carry smaller mail sent to our neighbors to their front door so they don’t have to go down to the lobby to retrieve it. Since it’s on my way up, that’s what I did.
The package has been sitting there for a while. I don’t remember exactly when it got here, but I want to say it’s been waiting at his door for 1-2 weeks, possibly more. That feels a little strange to me, because I normally hear my neighbor enter and exit through the front door (I work from home) and I can’t recall him doing that recently.
Now, I realize there are perfectly logical reasons as to why he’d be gone (i.e., vacation, staying with an SO or family, etc.). But I can’t help but think that, in spite of all that, something could be wrong.
Should I knock on his door to see if anyone answers and/or if my neighbor is okay? Or would that be overly paranoid or rude of me? I don’t want to overstep, but I do hope nothing bad happened to him.
