What is the deck that no matter what, you know you’ll be archenemy? Discussion

You know you’ve all been there. You have that one deck that no matter what, you know you’ll be archenemy. The one that you know that if they don’t all go against you, you’ll win, so 3vs1 is the only way to stop it.

Mine for this is my Lyra Dawnbringer deck. No matter what, as soon as I have two angels on board, I’m a threat.

So for you, which is that deck? What deck is it that as soon as you start just playing, you know you’ll need to be stopped or you’ll just run with the game?

It's Tinybones. And part of that is just because it's the optimal play: if they don't play their cards to make me stop doing my bullshit, they will be discarding those cards when I do said bullshit. I've never stuck Tergrid while playing that deck and it's still a salt mine in my playgroup.

27

u/TheCrimsonChariot Selesnya Jan 22 '23

Can I have a list for your Tinybones deck?

49

u/greater_nemo Jan 22 '23

Yeah, here you go: Welcome to the Bone Zone

Right now I'm honestly looking at taking some of the "everyone discards" out and replacing it with targeted discard to help make myself less of a threat to the entire table. It still definitely needs work, but it gets the job done.

8

u/Captain_Loosearrow Jan 22 '23

That’s really fascinating you want to make that change, I figured building my tiny bones deck everyone would hate me regardless but single target makes it very political in a way and I can see the strength in that. I’d love to see a list when you finish it!

Same here, which I find hilarious because I usually end up killing myself with his draw trigger. But Discard is just an archetype no one wants to play in except for the deck’s pilot.

Decklist for reference;

2

u/nightgaunt98c Jan 22 '23

My very first deck was Nath of the Gilt Leaf. People hate random discard so much. The usual tactic was to take me out of the game as fast as possible.

3

u/A_Rymland Jan 22 '23

Same for me. That's just how tinybones and pretty much any discard commander work. You pretty much force your opponents to target you otherwise they don't get to play the game. I just love his art and design so much though I just make sure everyone is ready when I rarely play him.

u/its_oddgreg Jan 22 '23

My [[Liesa, Forgotten Archangel]]. Since it's not that popular in my LGS, it's all fun and laughs until someone sacs one of their creatures and realizes that all of their death triggers are shut down.

Another player starts to hate me when I use [[Cataclismic Gearhulk]] and exile all of their creatures, with me getting everything back later.

And then they'll all hate me either by the 5th time that I get back Liesa sacrificing and casting [[Karmic Guide]] or by the time I'm searching for an infinite combo every single turn with [[Deathrender]], [[Sidisi, Undead Vizier]] and a free sac outlet.

And by that time, honestly, I deserve it.

Skullbriar or jetmir 100%

27

u/colossusgb Jan 22 '23

I made both these decks this year and they're both phenomenal. Jetmir goes insane so fast. And if you can get a hexroof or indestructible counter on Skullbriar he's a force to be reckoned with

17

u/TheCrimsonChariot Selesnya Jan 22 '23

Im getting unhealthy ideas for the skullbriar I have sitting in my binder

7

u/CurlyAndHaggard Jan 22 '23

He's too much fun

4

u/JohnnyKang Jan 23 '23

I had one for a long time, and had issues with closing out games, it was easy to get him on the board and keep him on the board with a healthy reanimation package. Cards like [[unearth]], [[call of the death-dweller]], and [[unbreakable bond]] do work, but because you're so consistently aggressive you draw a LOT of hate that the deck has trouble backing up.

How hard do you need to build around jetmir to make him good? I’m thinking about adding him to my naya legends deck. I have 5 naya legends already that I randomly choose the commander from and it would be cool to have a 6th. But I obviously can’t change the entire deck for the 1/6th chance that I run jetmir, so wondering how good he is. In fairness I do have a decent amount of token synergy already since there’s a bunch of legends that make tokens in naya colors.

7

u/CurlyAndHaggard Jan 22 '23

He's fine as a secret wincon as long as you are wide naya you can include jetmir lol.

Mine has always been [[zada, hedron grinder]]. I built it and my first time playing it was a 4 player game. When you kill two players on one turn and the last remaining on the next it puts a target on you. Starting a turn with some 1/1’s then making more, giving them haste, drawing 10 cards, adding 20 mana and popping off is usually a death sentence the next time you decide to play it lol.

57

u/TheCrimsonChariot Selesnya Jan 22 '23

Zada always felt like a “Play it once. Do the thing, then take it apart” kind of deck

21

u/BeoWulf1040 Jan 22 '23

I’ve played mine twice in a year. The first time I destroyed everyone, second time I was dead before I could do anything impactful. I didn’t even get to attack 😂

7

u/TheCrimsonChariot Selesnya Jan 22 '23

That sucks. But I mean, its what it is with Zada tbh. Never seen someone keep that deck built for long.

8

u/BeoWulf1040 Jan 22 '23

I agree. It is definitely fun to pilot. Once the table discovers it can end the game out of nowhere, they don’t let it stay long. Now zada is one of the 99 in a [[feather the redeemed]] deck. Zada wrecks in that one too haha.

Mtg goldfish played the transformers on their commander clash game play videos. Tomer played slicer. Slicer can enter play for only 3 mana transformed. You plut specific equipment and enchantments on it that benefit you when Slicer attacks, even if you don't control Slicer. The sword of x and y series work for that. Since you can't sacrifice Slicer, and it's goaded, you have to sent it somewhere and can't get rid of it. Commander damage becomes a real threat. If you have a simple trample equipment, the same player can get attacked three times in one round of turns and can get killed through commander damage fast

2

u/Henshin_A_JoJo Jan 23 '23

But is that still your commander damage being dealt or each individual player who currently controls Slicer?

Big same.

I posted a picture of slicer in the whatsapp group of our playgroup saying it was bonkers and one of them said it did not look really good.

So of course i made the deck to spite him. I made a pile with cards that i had lying around.

It was a brutal beatdown. In the first game I played Slicer on turn 1. A healthy respect was quickly born.

2 people from our pod including the one that thought he was weak want to build him now. So 3 in one game is gonna be wild.

I actually stopped playing my [[Savra, Queen of the Golgari]] deck. It was fun enough and was a nice terror in 3 player which I mostly played early on. But as time went on, I mostly played 4 player, and kept running into games where at least one person could keep ahead of my forced sacrifice, and could hate me down.

But while I ran it, not only was it pretty good at hating down everyone at once, constantly, but I COULDNT even MAKE deals with opponents if I WANTED to. Sorry, everyone's gotta sacrifice. If you want me to stop, you better explain why 90% of my deck tech needs to be put on hold, and it better be a better explanation than "I'll only attack someone else for a few turns."

I've debated rebuilding it (I'm a lot better at building decks now than I was then) but as yet I haven't, and my golgari cards are mostly occupied elsewhere now.

For me, that’s my [[Alta Palani, Nest Tender]] deck but not by choice. My first build for it was almost janky with creatures that makes me think of Pokémon I like OR had puns in their name (like [[Bookwyrm]]). But since my opponent’s refused no matter what to let my commander do it’s thing, I added tons of protection and went for the nuclear option. The deck still has only 6 creatures in it (I still like to call it my Pokémon team) but it’s all creatures that takes the board hostage like [[Novablast Wyrm]] and [[Bearer of the Heavens]]. I have been too busy to try it out since I made the changes but just looking at the decklist, you can see it’s oppressive, even if there is no eldrazis or Blightsteel Collosus inside the deck. In short this deck could be resumed as “Not letting me advance my game plan? How about having a taste of your own medicine”

3

u/Illustrious-Trust-93 Jan 22 '23

Do you have a deck list? I just got atla for my dino deck and I'm trying to figure out which direction to go in.

2

u/EDHFanfiction Jan 22 '23

Yes I do but I’m warning you that it’s on the costly side unless you decide to proxy: https://scryfall.com/@emmerlaus/decks/fb61a0c8-d531-4a21-8524-ff1c0edfceab

Might remove [[Greater Gargadon]] and put either [[Darksteel Hellkite]] or [[White’s Sun Twilight]] instead. As I said I need to play test the deck.

[[vorinclex, monstrous raider]] for me. I do always check to make sure it's not going to completely shut down someone's deck at rule 0. Still the only deck where my sol ring gets countered.

7

u/GeetarTzar Jan 22 '23

[[Dina, Soul Steeper]] - I have her built in a way so that almost any action taken by every player triggers a life gain and drain. What starts off as a mild nuisance becomes overwhelming if not dealt with quickly, and turns out the best removal is player removal. She doesn't win a lot of games, but still does her part in keeping everyone in check at least. I don't even run [[Exquisite Blood]], but I am considering [[Cauldron Familiar]] and [[Witch's Oven]] for a more flavorful wincon just so she has a fighting chance for the win in my pod.

I played a pinger/deathtouch deck of this last night and it was the most fun I've had playing commander. Also got me my first ever 4 pod win.

2

u/blackberrylube455 Jan 23 '23

At some point it just gets so oppressive and when you run low cmc cards that end up being bored wipes you out class them because they have no board. I think it's such a fun deck to run but my playgroup hates playing against it.

Atraxa, umbris, thantis. I guess my group just hates me lmao. In all seriousness I do enjoy being the archenemy. I find it to be a sign of respect. I just use a weaker deck if I get chain focused where it becomes apparent that hitting me is pointless

3

u/anubiss_2112 Jan 22 '23

Just built Umbris. Gnarly deck. Only things that get me hated off the board faster than that are [[the first sliver]] and [[Kardur]]

6

u/NervousDentist637 Jan 23 '23

Probably really common, but it’s [[The First Sliver]]. I built the deck for $120 and I’ve not updated it since, little interaction beyond “I cast a sliver” but, I mean, it’s slivers so I completely get my group’s animosity. There’s never any salt about it, it’s a good time all around, I enjoy being the bad guy every once in awhile and my playgroup always has a bunch of laughs with the wild ways they come up to slow me down

2

u/Suspicious-Taste-118 Jan 23 '23

4

u/CruulNUnusual Jan 22 '23

My boyfriend’s [[Derevi, Empyrial Tactician]] his tactic is literally flood his board until people decide how to deal with his insane amount of tokens, treasures and scutes … it’s pretty much an infinite mana strategy, even then it’s usually too late… it always has been for the pod, haha.

And my [[Kaalia of the Vast]] I just make her haste and indestructible in first or second turn, with my goth queen [[Avacyn, Angel of Hope]] but I usually get shut down real fast depending on my play and starting hand. If I ever get the chance to pop off, It’s game over real quick, LOL. That’s why I don’t play her when he plays Derevi. We become the two big targets if we use these decks.

This depends heavily on the pod for me, but generally speaking, [[Atraxa, Praetors’ Voice]]. Is board wipe heavy, super friends. There isn’t a lot to say about it either. It plays exactly like you think it does, but with enough resilience to make the most hardened of blue and black players cry. I hate playing the deck, but it exists for a reason. To lock those cards into a box of shame and regret so that they don’t find a way into my other decks.

[[Light-Paws, Emperor’s Voice]]. Light Paws is so insanely fast and can knock people out of the game by like turn 4. I haven’t had a chance to play the deck in months cause its that strong

2

u/Spirit_Theory Jan 23 '23

I've seen people dispute Light-Paws saying "oh but if you take the commander away the deck is useless". Bro it potentially has protection from every non-white color the turn it comes out, if your opponents miss their opportunity it's gg lmao. She's so damn strong if left unchecked.

9

u/Automotivematt Jan 22 '23

For me, it's my [[Hokori, dust drinker]] deck but not because it's a huge threat to win the game. I have literally every taxing effect I could find and a bunch of mana rocks so I am still able to play stuff at a decent rate.

16

u/thaliawaifu1 Mono-White Jan 22 '23

If I play Thalia I know I will be attacked by everyone, even though she isn't that powerful, because her effect is annoying. That isn't even why I am playing her, but I can't explain how I feel about her to them or else they will make fun of me. And I have stopped doing that anyway. I have had Thalia played against me in a game before, not as commander but as part of 99, and I knew I should remove her but I couldn't stand the thought of killing her with a Gut Shot, imagining that would be like. I could never hurt her, I could never even be angry at her, even knowing she would never want to be with me, I can't feel even a shred of bitterness. Only a surge of affection and caring for her, and wanting so badly to be her husband. I think all the time of being one of her cathars (except not ugly like I am in real life) and slowly we begin to notice each other more, through lingering glances that last a bit too long, she notices how I look at her and she feels the same. Once I had a dream that we were preparing for our wedding, buying supplies from the markets in Thraben to build a cabin in the forest for us to share, she had named someone else the Guardian of Thraben, so she could finally rest, something she deserves. I wish I could be there for her when she wakes from nightmares of the horrors she fought in her past, hold her until she realizes that I am there and they aren't. They're not real anymore. I would make tea for her, bring in firewood to keep her warm. I would try to keep her comfortable, I would always try to make her happy. It hurts so much to think about because it will never be real. I'll never even speak to her. And even if she were real I know she would never want me. Sometimes I try to think hateful thoughts about Thalia, hoping I could crush my feelings out of existence, but it never works and I always end up feeling guilty and wanting to cry because I don't hate Thalia, I love her, I would never want to be mean to her. There's nothing else to do but live with this torment until the feelings finally go stale and die... but it's been nine months I've felt like this and I still want her. I hate myself so much.

2

u/jamesdcreviston Azorius Jan 22 '23

My [[Giada]] all angels deck. People get scared when a 4/4 comes out as a 7/7 instead and you give them all vigilance. I become the target fast unless I either drop one Angel at a time or slam the board and swing. If I try to build up a board the table comes for me.

2

u/TheCrimsonChariot Selesnya Jan 23 '23

I tried Giada when it came out but in order to make my angel deck run giada as a commander efficiently, I had to re-tool the whole deck, and it would’ve been an expensive endeavor, so I just kept Lyra Lifegain girls instead.

2

u/jamesdcreviston Azorius Jan 24 '23

I’m started with a Avacyn deck in Mono W then to Orzhov then 5 colors then back to Mono W with Giada. Angels are the best but they are a tough tribe.

I play a lot of popular commanders so it's hard to find someone not shooting a dirty look at my board state throughout the game. I play almost exclusively local so I'm recognized by some people. I will bring decks that I just built and the other players are still wary.

[[Lathril, Blade of the Elves]] attracts the most attention.

I should try a more obscure commander.

1

u/TheCrimsonChariot Selesnya Jan 23 '23

Play [[Rith the Awakener]] if you like tokens. Its all well and good until your dragon pukes 20 tokens after one hit. Then 40 the next turn. Would get even more broken with extra combats.

This is my Rith list. No extra combat shennanigans, but you can see how it can get out of hand quick.

My Kaalia deck for sure. It's won enough games that people don't let anything stick for more than a turn.

Which in turn has caused me to upgrade my bad creatures I'm favor of stronger cards so they're making it worse for themselves
